CDPL is a team of attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators, and support staff that advocates for the lives and dignity of individuals facing the death penalty, both before and after trial. CDPL, often in tandem with other attorneys, represents 70% of the people currently on North Carolina’s death row. Many of our clients are mentally ill, intellectually disabled, and people of color. 100% of our clients are indigent, meaning they cannot afford to pay for an attorney.
Due in part to our tireless advocacy, North Carolina has not executed anyone since 2006. However, House Bill 307 has drastically changed the landscape of capital defense seemingly overnight. We need your assistance now more than ever to ensure that we can continue to provide the holistic support needed to sustain the lives of vulnerable individuals.
